As with anyone, I’m pounded daily with tasks at the workplace and just as many at home. As a computer graphics professional, I also get a lot of family and friends requesting assistance with their graphics projects, general computer troubleshooting and various other tasks. I have always been willing to help however I can, but unfortunately sometimes things would fall between the cracks. A few years ago, I adopted David Allen’s Getting Things Done (GTD) into my daily work flow. It didn’t take long for me to realize that GTD really does work. I’ve found that it really helps break those bigger tasks down to size while still keeping the small tasks in the forefront so they don’t fall in the cracks.

My brother, Ken, who introduced me to GTD, also introduced me to a variety of both GTD-friendly and general task management websites such as Evernote, Keep Tempo, Klok, Remember The Milk, Taglocity, Todoist, Toggl and Toodledo.

I’ve tried them all.

In the end, I found that what works for me is both Klok to keep track of my real-time on projects, but primarily I use Toodledo to keep track of all my tasks. What I love about Toodledo is the fact that it’s so versatile. There is an iPhone app, a Blackberry app, the ability to import new tasks through Twitter/SMS, email, the web, Outlook or a variety of other applications.

Personally, I don’t find a need for a data plan so I take advantage of Toodledo’s configuration with Twitter. So a simple SMS message to Twitter (40404) would be something like d toodledo Add a new task to Toodledo #today =5:00pm. That would be a direct message to Toodledo, telling the task name Add a new task to Toodledo to be due today at 5pm. It’s very fast, especially if you have a few commonly-used templates on your phone. For a full list of Toodledo’s special commands for Twitter, check them out here.

That is a quick rundown. I’ve had a few people ask me what I use for time management, so that’s why I wanted to post this. If you want more reading, Jason Schleifer has done some great research over on his website for some GTD websites. I’m always willing to change my work flow to make it more productive – so I’d love to hear how you organize your time and tasks!

Isn’t it funny how Microsoft gets ripped left and right for their “Genuine Advantage” tool, and yet you never hear anything from Apple lovers about their attempt to lock the iPhone. Granted, I don’t like WGA anymore than the next person…I’ve had it lock me out of a computer simply for swapping out an internal CD-ROM drive. Stupid. But Apple lovers, if you’re going to complain about the company you love to hate at least realize that your beloved Apple is doing the exact same sort of thing.

This is from Consumerist.com.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has petitioned the Library of Congress to officially protect phone owners who bypass software restrictions on their phones—aka “jailbreaking.” Apple has just filed an objection, arguing that doing so would infringe on their copyright. If Apple gets its way,

[it] would have the right to claim statutory damages of up to $2,500 “per act of circumvention.” People who jailbreak phones, might even be subject to criminal penalties of as long as five years, if they circumvented copyright for a financial gain.

The big question, of course, is who really owns your damned phone? Apple says that bypassing their software restrictions messes with the “chain of trust” they’ve set up and screws up their “ecosystem.” The EFF counters that if you apply Apple’s argument to another industry, it falls apart:

One need only transpose Apple’s arguments to the world of automobiles to recognize their absurdity. Sure, GM might tell us that, for our own safety, all servicing should be done by an authorized GM dealer using only genuine GM parts. Toyota might say that swapping your engine could reduce the reliability of your car. And Mazda could say that those who throw a supercharger on their Miatas frequently exceed the legal speed limit.

On a more serious note, they point out:

But the courts have long recognized that copying software while reverse engineering is a fair use when done for purposes of fostering interoperability with independently created software, a body of law that Apple conveniently fails to mention.

The EFF has set up a “Free Your Phone” website where you can follow the case as it moves before the Library of Congress: www.freeyourphone.org.

“Could You Go to Jail for Jailbreaking Your iPhone?” [Bits Blog - New York Times]
“Apple speaks out against jailbreaking” [vnunet]
