Two thousand and eight was a good year.

It peaked on September 19th, when I got married. For more information on that, check out my “Belated Announcement” post.

My daughter celebrated her sixth birthday this year. She’s growing up so quickly, but I’m very happy that I was able to find a job where I could live close to her and get to see her a lot more often. You can see plenty of pictures of her on my Flickr page.

I celebrated my two-year anniversary at my current job. I love it where I work, and I am very grateful for the ability to not only have a job in these trying economic times, but to have a job where I can show up an hour early every day and enjoy every minute of it. I’ve had plenty of jobs in the past where I dreaded going into work each day, and I’m thankful that my current job certainly isn’t one of those.

Another benefit to my current job, aside from being closer to my daughter, is that it’s closer to my parents as well. I’ve really enjoyed the ability to see my parents a lot more often and in the process get to know them better.

In rough estimates, I drove approximately 13,000 miles, listened to about 50,000 songs, watched a couple hundred movies and read a few dozen books. Obviously, I’m not much of a reader.

From me and my family, Happy New Years to you and yours!

So today I spent some time sitting in my car waiting for the defroster to do its work on the thin layer of ice that had formed over my windshield. I had the idea of playing a song on my car radio and at the same time playing that song on my MP3 player – while turning up the car radio and turning down my MP3 player so it would make the perfect mix. It took a few tries, but I was able to do so with The Black Dahlia Murder’s Deathmask Divine. It sounds pretty sweet in “surround sound”, you should give it a try sometime! In case you haven’t heard the song, I’ll stream it for you below. In fact, I’ll even include the lyrics so you can sing along!

Lyrics:
Removal of the eyes gives my heart a saddened chill
I preserve them in formaldehyde
to gaze upon at will
how their greenish flecks befill me
that starlit winters night
how I lost all that I ever was
while locked within their sight
before you sits a broken man
your fragile pinkish heart in hand
peculiar how it can hurt so bad
while love is only in the mind
I sew the gaping chest wound
each thread is made with love
the bosom where I would rest my face
is covered in your blood
no
this is not the end
you’ll live on eternally
oh
lord its not the end
my secret you’ll forever be
I interrupt this transformation
a familiar lust swelling in me
a long and soulful kiss
the shades are drawn the living world cant see
the coil of entrails
how curious the smell
so pungent to my eager nostrils
hands further compelled
no
no its not the end
forever you’ll be in my arms
I could never let you go
my darling cold and blue
I wonder are you dreaming still
spread eagle blood removed
I weave the sucking trocar
beneath your bruising skin
tonight I’ll lay beside you darling in necromantic sin
[solo]
pinned to the bed sheets like a prized butterfly
you’re mine
I hear your voice so precious echoing deeply inside
I did my best to love you
while you did live and breathe
this tender taxidermy
trophy of the bereaved

Me: Just got done watching The Happening
Brother: and?
Me: Wow
Me: That’s all I can say
Brother: I know, right?
Brother: pretty miserable.
Me: To put it lightly
Me: I’m just sooooo glad I didn’t pay for it!
Me: How the hell does Zooey Deschanel keep get acting roles!?
Me: She’s terrible!
Brother: She…yeah, I can’t defend her. Especially in this movie.
Brother: yeah, it was pretty awful
Brother: I thoroughly enjoyed John Leguizamo smashing his jeep into a tree, then slitting his wrists. It was like they filmed the extremes an actor was willing to go to get out of that movie.
Me: I have not seen Zooey in a movie where she’s a good actress
Me: She’s just terrible
Me: She’s beyond terrible, because she keeps popping up in movies
Me: Yeah that was cool
Brother: I liked her in that Will Ferrell movie.
Me: It was a mixture of War of the Worlds (the newer movie), Final Destination and whatever the worst episode of the X-Files is.
Brother: with a healthy dash of M. Night thinking everything he writes is gold.
Me: Was “Joey” even in the movie?
Brother: Joey?
Me: Yeah
Brother: who’s Joey?
Me: The guy that was calling Zooey’s character
Brother: oh, was that M. Night?
Me: That’s who M. Night played
Me: yeah
Me: I didn’t recognize him by the caller ID, though
Me: because it said….Joey
Brother: I don’t know dude, the plot was so ridiculous I barely paid attention to it.
Me: I’m just glad that someone else paid for it so I didn’t have to.
Brother: Yeah, I’m glad you didn’t pay for it. It would’ve made you angry I suspect.
Me: Yes
Me: It would have
Me: I’m still a little pissed about taking up my evening with it
Me: But I can get over that because at least I’m not out $18 also
Brother: yeah, true.
Brother: and it’s worth it if you can stop just one other person from inflicting it upon themselves.
Brother: like reverse Amway
Me: Can they pay me for watching it?
Brother: if you can find a way to make that work, let me know.
Me: I don’t think I’ve ever been this disappointed in a movie.
Brother: did you expect it’d be good?
Me: Well not after the bad reviews from after it came out…but I didn’t expect it to be
Me: ….to be…..
Me: ….whatever the hell THAT was
Brother: yeah, it sucked big ones.
Brother: anyway dude. I’m crashing. I’ll talk to you in the morning.
Me: Alright.
